When Should Your Child Start an Oral Health Routine?

Good oral health begins much earlier than many parents realize. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry instructs that a little one’s oral care routine starts before their first tooth even appears. Establishing good habits early helps set the foundation for a lifetime of healthy smiles.

Before the First Tooth: Infant Oral Care (0-6 Months)

Even before teeth erupt, bacteria can accumulate in your baby’s mouth. To prevent buildup, gently wipe their gums twice a day with a clean, damp washcloth or a soft infant toothbrush. This simple practice helps remove bacteria and prepares them for future brushing habits.

The First Tooth: Introducing a Toothbrush (6-12 Months)

As soon as your baby’s first tooth appears, it’s time to start brushing! Use a soft-bristled, infant-sized toothbrush with a tiny smear (grain-of-rice-sized) amount of fluoride toothpaste. 

Brush their teeth twice a day, especially before bedtime. At this stage, it’s also recommended to schedule your child’s first dental visit by their first birthday to ensure proper development and detect any early concerns.

Toddler Years: Teaching Independence (1-3 Years)

By age one, children should have a daily brushing routine with a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Since young children don’t yet have the coordination to brush effectively, parents should assist with brushing until at least age six. Make brushing fun by using songs, timers, or child-friendly toothbrushes to encourage consistency.

Preschool & Early Childhood: Learning Proper Techniques (3-6 Years)

At this stage, kids start to learn how to spit after brushing and may want to take on more independence. Continue supervising their brushing to ensure they reach all tooth surfaces. Flossing should also be introduced once two teeth touch, usually around age two to three.

School-Age & Beyond: Building Strong Habits (6+ Years)

By age six, most children can start brushing on their own, but parents should continue checking to make sure they’re brushing properly and for a full two minutes. Encourage flossing as part of their nightly routine, and make sure they continue seeing Dr. Laurie every six months for preventive care.
